Three students from Kocaeli University, who were investigated for participating in the March 19 protests, were given a penalty of “indefinite expulsion from the dormitory” where they were staying.
The penalties were verbally communicated to the students, citing Article 24-2/f of the Dormitory Services Regulation; they were given until Friday to vacate the dormitory.
The Dormitory Services Directorate, affiliated with the Provincial Directorate of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, stated that it could not provide information on the matter on the grounds that it “concerned security” and reported that the practice was in accordance with the general directorate’s disciplinary regulations.
In a written statement, Kocaeli Emek Youth emphasized that this “arbitrary practice” during exam week must end immediately, stating:
“As a result of unlawful investigations opened on the grounds that they participated in the March protests last year, three Kocaeli University students received penalties of expulsion from the dormitory. While the punishment should have been officially notified in writing, the students were only informed verbally. Participating in protests in the city square is not a crime. Let us not surrender our rights to housing and protest to the palace regime; let us raise our voices together.”
