An investigation was launched against BirGün editor Kayhan Ayhan by Istanbul Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office Press Crimes Investigation Bureau. Ayhan was summoned to testify on March 19 on the grounds that he covered the student protests that started after Ekrem İmamoğlu was detained and shared them on his social media account.
Giving his statement at the Anadolu Palace of Justice with his lawyer Tolgay Güvercin, Ayhan said, “I did journalism, I exercised the public’s right to receive news.” “The posts are news, my client acted within the scope of freedom of expression,” said his lawyer Güvercin, requesting non-prosecution.
Ayhan had previously been investigated for the news report titled “2.5 hours of violence against villagers” and for his posts on election irregularities.
