Emine Akbaba, a member of the İzmir Karşıyaka Community Center, was classified as a “high-risk convict” by the İzmir Probation Office following her conviction in a “defamation of Erdoğan” case stemming from protests she participated in during 2015. Akbaba was required to sign in daily, undergo house arrest at night for 115 days, perform unpaid community service, and attend mandatory seminars. Akbaba applied to the Enforcement Court to have her supervision plan changed, but her applications were rejected on the grounds of “risk of reoffending.” Halkevleri lawyers stated that the application was a punishment imposed for exercising freedom of expression.
