The Ege University Rectorate required organizers to obtain permission from the Rectorate before holding demonstrations, marches, press statements and similar events on campus. Students criticized the notice, which was sent to faculty deans under the signature of Rector Musa Alcı, and said the decision restricted freedom of expression and students’ rights to democratic participation. The students argued that spaces for thought and expression at universities were increasingly narrowing and that the measure would have a chilling effect.
