The trial of police officers accused in connection with the death of Onur Yaser Can, who took his own life after being subjected to ill-treatment while in custody, was heard on February 27 at Istanbul 6th Heavy Penal Court. The prosecutor requested prison sentences of up to 13 years for the defendant police officers. The defense attorneys filed a motion to recuse the judge. The court rejected the request for additional time and postponed the hearing until April 10. Previously, two police officers had been sentenced to prison for “tampering with, destroying, or concealing official documents,” but the appeals court overturned the case to evaluate a reduction in sentence for good behavior. The family’s lawyers requested the maximum sentence for the defendants.
