The prosecutor presented the final opinion in the case opened as part of an “extortion by a public official” investigation into Bolu Municipality. The prosecutor brought charges including “aggravated fraud,” “extortion by a public official,” “attempted extortion” and “bribery” against 19 defendants, including suspended Bolu Mayor Tanju Özcan, in relation to different incidents. The opinion alleged that Özcan exerted pressure and obtained benefits through supermarkets, companies doing business with the municipality and licensing procedures. The prosecutor sought a total prison sentence of between 69 years and six months and 217 years for Özcan and requested that his detention continue.
