Istanbul University students protested the attacks on the Sheikh Maksud and Ashrafiya neighborhoods of Aleppo on January 9 at the Beyazıt Campus. Police cordoned off the area where the statement and march were to take place and prevented the march from proceeding. The students stated that more than 10 people had been killed and approximately 100 injured in the attacks that began on January 6, and called for the attacks to be stopped. After the statement, police intervened against the crowd attempting to march to Beyazıt Square; many people were beaten and handcuffed. It was reported that a group nearby had shouted provocative slogans prior to the intervention.
