The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office filed a case against 45 people who gathered at Kurtuluş Park on 7 July to protest the NATO Summit, on a charge of violating Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations. The defendants included Halkevleri Chair Linda Sevinç Hocaoğulları, TİP Ankara Provincial Chair Fırat Çoban, Labor Party Ankara Provincial Chair Rüstem Kahraman and Workers’ Movement Party Ankara Provincial Chair Öykü Ilgın Gürses. The Ankara Governor’s Office had banned meetings, demonstrations and press statements in the city between 28 June and 10 July. Citing this decision, police blocked the protest at Kurtuluş Park and detained the demonstrators. In the indictment, prosecutors cited slogans including “Murderer NATO, get out of Türkiye,” “Murderer USA, collaborator AKP” and “Imperialists, collaborators, do not forget the 6th Fleet” as grounds for the charges. Prosecutors alleged that the demonstrators failed to comply with warnings to disperse and requested their punishment.
