The Civil Society in the Penal System Association (CİSST) released data on girls held in prisons in Türkiye on 11 October, International Day of the Girl Child. According to data dated 1 October 2026 shared by the association, a total of 266 girls aged 12-18 were held in prisons, 185 in pretrial detention and 81 as convicted prisoners. Girls constituted 0.06 percent of the total prison population. CİSST said girls in closed prisons were held in children’s wards of adult women’s prisons and that these institutions were not suited to children’s needs. It emphasized that only one independent education house existed nationwide for girls and that this situation separated children from their families. The association said there were also pregnant girls and girls with children in prisons, but systematic social assessment and protection mechanisms addressing their needs were not functioning. It said girls were exposed to discrimination and isolation and called for an end to the imprisonment of children.
