Kamil Murat Demir, who declared his conscientious objection in 2018, was sentenced to 21 months in prison in a trial on charges of “draft evasion”.
Tunceli 1st Tunceli Criminal Court of First Instance found that Demir was a draft evader in three separate periods between 2022 and 2024 and sentenced him in accordance with Article 63/1-a of the Military Penal Code.
The court concluded that the defendant’s “tendency to commit crimes” continued and did not apply any reduction, postponement or alternative sanctions.
Demir will not be able to benefit directly from probation in accordance with Article 105/A of Law No. 5275; he will be kept in a penal institution for 1 month and 25 days.
With the finalization of the decision, the file will be transferred to Erzurum Regional Court of Appeals.
