Journalist Evrim Kepenek was sentenced to 10 months in prison for “violating the confidentiality of an investigation” due to a news report she published. The court deferred the announcement of the verdict.

Kepenek, bianet Women’s News Editor, was put on trial for the news she reported on the alleged death of a two-year-old child in Beylikdüzü, Istanbul due to sexual abuse. Kepenek and her lawyer Deniz Yazgan Şenay made a defense at the trial held at the Büyükçekmece 9th Criminal Court of First Instance.

Kepenek stated that there was no confidentiality order on the file at the time he reported the news and emphasized that he did not intend to commit a crime. “I did not use the name of the child or his family in the news article. I only included verified information, respecting the presumption of innocence,” he said.

His lawyer Şenay also stated that Kepenek did not use any names in the news article, that there was no element of intent and that they demanded his acquittal.

The court sentenced Evrim Kepenek to 10 months in prison and deferred the announcement of the verdict.
