Middle East Technical University (METU) Biology and Genetics Society and Tree of Evolution organize Aykut Kence Evolution Conference in collaboration for the last 12 years. This year, the conference organised on February 9 and 10 was prevented by the university Rectorate.
The Rectorate closed all meeting halls and auditoriums to use due to reconstruction and renovation at METU Culture and Congress Center since January 2019 and cancelled all events organised until the end of March. METU Biology and Genetics Society reserved the location about a year ago, whereas the Rectorate announced that it will be out of order for the 13th Aykut Kence Evolution Conference as well. METU Biology and Genetics Society made a statement on the social media and said, “A photo was published on the Facebook page of the Middle East Technical University at METU Culture and Congress Center with the Minister of Youth and Sports in it. So it seems that the Center is only in order for events organised that are approved by the government and the Rectorate, whereas out of order for events organised by other student communities like ours.”
