The Diyarbakır 9th High Criminal Court explained the grounds for the 19-year-and-six-month prison sentence it imposed on former Free Women’s Movement spokesperson Ayşe Gökkan on a charge of “membership in an organization.” The court treated Gökkan’s activities in the Democratic Society Congress, her statements on femicides and violence, her demands concerning the Kurdish language, the protests she attended and her work on women’s organizing as criminal evidence. The ruling also used statements by witness Gül Tanrıverdi as evidence despite objections that she gave contradictory testimony in earlier trials.
