The Istanbul 13th Criminal Court of First Instance sentenced comedian Tuba Ulu to five months in prison on a charge of “publicly degrading a section of the public” over a joke she made about Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. The court deferred the announcement of the verdict. Ulu and her lawyer sought acquittal, arguing that the joke did not degrade women and that the elements of the offense were not present.
