At the Edirne Selimiye KYK Girls’ Dormitory, male staff members wrote their phone numbers on the bunk beds, waited outside the dormitory until late at night, entered the students’ private areas, and harassed them with their stares. In response, university students collected signatures and demanded that the dormitory administration take action. Instead of responding to the harassment, the administration targeted the students who initiated the signature campaign and demanded a defense. When the harassment allegations became a hot topic on social media, the Edirne Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation into three university students on charges of “publicly spreading misleading information.” The Security Branch summoned the students for questioning and asked them whether they had used the accounts that shared the posts reporting the harassment, considering the posts to be criminal acts. The students had previously stated that the dormitory administration had taken no action against the harassing staff, but instead demanded a defense by accusing the complaining university students of “redirecting” in a WhatsApp group. In a statement on October 22, the University Women’s Collective called on the dormitory administration to take responsibility and stated that they would fight against practices that protect harassers.
