A lawsuit was filed against journalist Ahmet Kanbal on charges of “disseminating misleading information to the public” due to the remarks he made during his live broadcasts during the Maraş earthquakes on February 6, 2023.
Kanbal, a reporter for the Mesopotamia Agency, was accused of saying “State mechanisms have completely collapsed, people have been left to die” in a live broadcast from Adıyaman. The indictment claimed that these statements were capable of disturbing public peace and aimed to create fear and panic among the public.
The allegations in question were separated from a previous case initiated on suspicion of “making propaganda for an illegal organization” but ended in non-prosecution. Adıyaman Criminal Court of First Instance accepted the case against the journalist under Article 217/A of the Turkish Penal Code.
