Journalist Yelda Çiçek was detained in Diyarbakır in 2019 while covering protests against the appointment of trustees to municipalities and was sentenced to 5 months in prison on charges of “opposing the Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations”. The Constitutional Court (AYM) ruled that his freedom of press and expression had been violated and ordered a retrial.
In the second hearing of the retrial held at Diyarbakır 4th Criminal Court of First Instance, the prosecutor gave a final opinion for acquittal. The court also ruled for acquittal. Yelda Çiçek stated that she repeated her previous defenses and demanded her acquittal.
This case was handled within the scope of the “Muhammet Yavuz Aktepe and Others” application, in which the Constitutional Court found that the “right to a fair trial” had been violated.
