74 Bar Association Chairmen made a call to the Court of Cassation to issue stay of execution against the sentences issued against imprisoned Cumhuriyet Daily workers. “The Cumhuriyet Daily Case carries a symbolic quality in terms of press freedom and freedom of expression and that the conclusion of this case concerns all newspapers and journalists,” stated the call. It was further pointed out that as different applications were made in terms of appeal, continuing the execution of the sentences against those penalised from the same charge (despite receiving less sentences) creates “an inconvenience in the public conscience.”
