The defendant soldier Hakan Alkan was not arrested again in the case of 18-month-old Mehmet Uytun, who was killed by a gas canister fired in 2009 while he was in his mother’s arms on the balcony of his house in Cizre district of Şırnak. The court rejected the requests for the arrest of the defendant and the discovery of the crime scene. The family lawyers had requested discovery to shed light on the incident. The Ministry of National Defense claimed that the cartridge was not in the inventory. The trial was adjourned until January 20, 2026. Rights organizations describe the case as an example of the ongoing “chain of impunity” in cases involving state officials.
