The Court of Cassation overturned the verdict of the local court, ruling that the remarks of İsmet Tan, a DBP member of Van Municipality Assembly, who was on trial for “insult” upon the complaint of AKP Tuşba Mayor Fevzi Özgökçe, were within the scope of heavy criticism. In the retrial, Van 4th Criminal Court of First Instance acquitted Tan in accordance with the Court of Cassation’s decision. The court stated that the remarks may have been rude or disturbing, but not to the extent of damaging honor and dignity. In a press statement in 2017, Tan drew attention to corruption allegations in Tuşba Municipality.
