Two people died as a result of torture inflicted by gendarmes on 9 Syrian asylum seekers detained in 2023 at a border post in Reyhanlı, Hatay. It was revealed that the asylum seekers were beaten with sticks and cables, made to drink diesel fuel and one of them was buried in the junkyard of the police station. Hatay 4th High Criminal Court sentenced 4 soldiers to two life sentences and 7.5 years in prison. 11 soldiers were acquitted and other defendants were sentenced to various penalties for tampering with evidence and injury. The verdict set an important precedent in documenting torture and preventing impunity.
