The court’s stay of execution decision regarding RTÜK’s 5-day blackout penalty against TELE1 has been canceled. Unless the decision is reversed by a higher court, TELE1 will be blacked out for 5 days on the night connecting August 31 to September 1. RTÜK has decided to suspend Merdan Yanardağ’s “4 Questions 4 Answers” program, in which he said, “July 15 was an Islamist coup attempt. The AKP government is mainly responsible for this coup” as “inciting the public to hatred and hostility” and imposed a screen blackout and a 5 percent fine on the channel. CHP RTÜK Member Tuncay Keser interpreted the decision as preparing the ground for TELE1’s license revocation. TELE1 had previously faced broadcasting suspensions on similar grounds.
