Melek Akarmut, who shared security camera footage of a dog sleeping on the sidewalk being run over by a taxi in the Artuklu district of Mardin on May 26, 2024, was sentenced to two years in prison for “violating the privacy of private life.” The footage showed the taxi running over the dog and the driver continuing on his way. After the incident, the taxi driver was fined under the Animal Protection Law. Following the driver’s complaint, the court convicted Akarmut for sharing the footage. After the ruling, Akarmut surrendered to the Elazığ Campus Open Prison on January 15.
