Academic Cenk Yiğiter, who was previously dismissed from Ankara University with an emergency decree, stood trial due to ‘insulting the President’ with his social media posts.
In the first hearing at Ankara 20th Criminal Court of First Instance, Yiğiter indicated that he did not intend to refer to the President while writing “captain” in his related post. However, President Erdoğan’s lawyer Sami Kabadayı asserted that the expression “captain” is almost identical with Erdoğan in common language. “To claim that such an adjective is officially identical to the President of the Republic reminds one of the adjectives given to Hitler as Führer, to Mussollini as Duce. Such an identification can not be of question in a democratic country,” said Yiğiter. The next hearing was scheduled to 4 October 2018.
