The trial of BirGün executives Uğur Koç, Yaşar Gökdemir and İbrahim Aydın, who are on trial for a news article in which Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor Akın Gürlek was mentioned, was adjourned until September 22, 2025.
On February 8, 2025, the three executives were detained in the night hours and are facing up to 5 years in prison on charges of “insulting a public official”. The court adjourned the hearing for the preparation of the final opinion and did not lift the travel ban on Uğur Koç and Yaşar Gökdemir.
The news article that was the subject of the lawsuit was about Sabah newspaper’s visit to Akın Gürlek at his office. The indictment claimed that the news article “humiliated” Gürlek and “damaged his reputation”.
