A prosecutor’s information note emerged indicating that journalist Murat Ağırel, who was detained as part of the fund investigation, was being considered for referral to court with a request for arrest before his statement procedures had been completed. Ağırel, who had previously been released under judicial control on a charge of “publicly disseminating misleading information” and was later placed under house arrest, was detained again on the morning of 16 October. Pro-government journalist Fuat Uğur shared the information note on social media and reported that referral with a request for arrest was being considered for Ağırel, Emir Sarıgül and Volkan Aslanbaş. Cumhuriyet columnist Barış Pehlivan criticized the fact that referral for arrest was being discussed before Ağırel’s statement had even been taken. Uğur argued that the note did not contain a final decision and that the prosecutor’s assessment could change after statements were taken.
