Former Iğdır co-mayor Yaşar Akkuş was released from Erzurum H Type Closed Prison after completing his 7-year and 6-month prison sentence on charges of “illegal organization membership”. On May 18, 2020, Akkuş, who was dismissed and replaced by a trustee, was reportedly released from prison in the morning and is expected to be welcomed with a mass reception in Iğdır.
