Syrian human rights activist Taha Elgazi, who was detained in Istanbul with his wife, signed “voluntary repatriation” papers and was sent back to Syria with his wife. Elgazi said he plans to return to Turkey legally with a passport in a short time.

It is learned that Elgazi was taken from his home by the police on Friday evening and was first transferred to Security Directorate in Vatan Street, then to Arnavutköy Repatriation Center and finally to Aydın Repatriation Center. Elgazi’s wife, who was not heard from for a while after his detention, was also detained in the following days.

Elgazi announced on WhatsApp that he and his wife had crossed into Syria through Öncüpınar Border Gate. The decision to send them back was based on the “administrative restriction code G-207”, which means “participation in provocative actions”.

Elgazi said, “The most logical thing was for my wife not to stay in the repatriation center. Therefore, I signed the documents for voluntary return. I will re-enter Turkey legally with a passport.”
