Eight villagers opposing TAYKAR Enerji’s solar power plant (GES) project in Bağbaşı village in Uşak were detained by gendarmerie. The villagers began a vigil to prevent the company from transporting materials to the project site despite an administrative court’s stay-of-execution decision. Gendarmerie detained eight people, including village head Ahmet Karakuş, as they tried to prevent trucks from passing. Funda Öz Akcura, spokesperson for the Murat Mountain Must Not Disappear Platform, said the court ruling had not been implemented for 21 days and that company vehicles were being allowed into an area that villagers and their animals had been unable to enter for 10 months. Akcura said gendarmerie prevented villagers from taking photographs and broadcasting live, while the governor’s office and gendarmerie officials said the court decision had not been formally served on them. Villagers protesting the detentions held a press statement and sit-in at Ciritoğlu Park in central Uşak. The EIA approval for the project by TAYKAR Enerji, part of Egesa, had been granted on 12 January. Villagers demanded implementation of the stay-of-execution decision and protection of their land and water.
