Fourteen people were detained in an investigation by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office into allegations of financing ISIS. The investigation was launched on the basis of information obtained after German police detained four women and three men on the same allegation on 31 May 2023. Prosecutors alleged that donations were collected in German-speaking countries to secure the release of ISIS members held in camps in northern Syria or to provide financial support to the organization, and that the money was transferred to Syria through Telegram channels, WISE and other financial intermediaries. Following the examination of MASAK reports and phone records, proceedings were initiated against 16 people, two Syrian nationals and one Uzbek national among them. Police detained 14 people in simultaneous operations carried out in various provinces centered on Ankara on 20 October on charges of “membership in an armed organization” and “violating the law on the prevention of financing terrorism.” The investigation continued.
