An investigation was launched on June 13 against Halk TV reporter Umut Taştan, who was covering the protest by Özşen Mining workers. Taştan had gone down into the mine to interview the miners who had begun a hunger strike. The Independent Mining Workers’ Union (Bağımsız Maden-İş) condemned the investigation, stating that journalistic activities cannot be considered a crime.
