An investigation was launched against Cumhuriyet writer Müjdat Gezen on charges of “inciting the public to hatred and hostility” due to his remarks in the program “Bizim Ev” with journalist Ayşenur Arslan.
Gezen said, “In Muslims, the deceased is buried with the name of his mother. Because there is a saying in Anatolia, your mother is definitely your mother, but your father may be your father.”
Gezen, 82, denied the accusation in his statement at the police station: “I pointed out the importance of women, I did not incite people to hatred and hostility.”
Speaking to Cumhuriyet, Gezen stated that his words glorified women and Anatolian culture and said, “I have tried to make people laugh and unite people throughout my life. It is inconceivable that these words are seen as a crime.”
