The 3rd Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation upheld the 10-year and 5-month prison sentence given to Rojbin Sevil Çetin, former co-mayor of Van’s Edremit district.
Çetin was on trial on charges of “being a member of an illegal organization” and “violating the law on illegal meetings and demonstrations”.
Çetin, who was elected in 2014, had been detained several times, arrested in 2020 and sent to Diyarbakır Women’s Closed Prison. The court cited women’s work, political activities and secret witness statements as grounds for the sentence.
Çetin’s lawyer Ekin Yeter stated that the verdict is against the law and that they will take the case to the Constitutional Court.
