The Istanbul 26th High Criminal Court announced its verdict in the retrial of journalists Ahmet Altan and Nazlı Ilıcak. The court sentenced Altan to 4 years and 6 months in prison and Ilıcak to 3 years and 9 months in prison on charges of “aiding an armed terrorist organization.” During the hearing, while Ilıcak requested acquittal, Altan’s lawyer cited the European Court of Human Rights’ rulings regarding violations of freedom of expression and personal liberty. Following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the original verdict, the court, after hearing the defenses, sentenced the two journalists to prison terms.
