Beyoğlu Mayor İnan Güney, who was arrested as part of the investigation into the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, has been suspended by the Interior Ministry as a “temporary measure”.
In addition to İnan Güney, 17 people were arrested in the latest investigation, including his relatives, his driver, his bodyguard and the brother of Murat Ongun’s wife. The prosecutor’s office announced that some suspects were being investigated for making social media posts “under Murat Ongun’s control”.
Murat Ongun, Chairman of the Board of Directors of IBB Medya A.Ş. and advisor to Ekrem İmamoğlu, was arrested in March and said that the process had “reached the dimension of persecution” against the family.
In his post before he was detained, İnan Güney wrote, “We have never had a single job that we cannot be held accountable for. İnan Güney is entrusted to Beyoğlu.”
With Güney’s arrest, the number of CHP Istanbul mayors arrested since March 19, including IBB Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, has risen to 11 and 16 in Turkey. 27 people were released on judicial control conditions.
