Ekrem İmamoğlu’s court-imposed fine in the case where he was tried for allegedly insulting Ordu Governor Seddar Yavuz at Ordu Airport during his Black Sea rallies following the June 2019 Istanbul election cancellation has been upheld. The court ruled that İmamoğlu had committed the crime of “insulting a public official in connection with their duties” and imposed a fine of 7,080 Turkish lira. After the appeal was rejected, the 4th Criminal Chamber of the Court of Appeals reviewed the case and upheld the sentence by majority vote, based on witness statements and audio and video recordings. The two members who dissented from the decision noted in their dissenting opinion that the words were not insults but rather impolite expressions of reaction to the situation.
