Lawyer Ebru Timtik, who was on an indefinite hunger strike for 238 days with the demand of fair trial, has lost her life. Istanbul Bar Association launched a statement with the title, “Ebru Timtik did not die” and said, “The authorities neglecting her fight will be recorded in the history of Turkish judiciary as ‘shame’.” Human Rights Association (IHD) Istanbul made a statement on the matter as well, saying, “Those governing this country are responsible of Timtik’s death. We call all powers of national and international public, law, human rights and democracy to take a stance against this attitude of the government.”
The funeral of Timtik was taken out of Istanbul Forensic Medicine Institute after the autopsy was finished. Those waiting in front of the Institute of Forensic Medicine to take the funeral were prevented by the police, who used tear gas. The Security Directorate announced that the commemoration organized by the Istanbul Bar Association, lawyers and Timtik’s relatives in front of Istanbul Bar Association building will not be allowed. Lawyers organized a commemoration in front of the Bar Association building without Timtik’s funeral there. The funeral ceremony was held in Gazi Cemevi. After the ceremony, the police attacked the group walking towards Gazi Cemetery for her burial.
