Journalists Ercüment Akdeniz and Yıldız Tar charged with ‘membership in an armed organization’: Gezi protests also in the indictment

A lawsuit was filed against journalists Ercüment Akdeniz and Yıldız Tar due to “membership in an armed organization”. The phone calls of the journalists, who were arrested two months ago as part of the HDK investigation, were considered as evidence in the indictment.

The indictment prepared by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office alleges that Akdeniz and Tar were active in the HDK, which is allegedly affiliated with the PKK/KCK. Among the charges were that they acted on the instructions of the organization and participated in protests. Ercüment Akdeniz was also charged in connection with the Gezi Park protests. Akdeniz stated that he had participated in the Gezi protests for peaceful purposes without being directed by anyone and that he had been acquitted on this ground.

In the indictment, journalists’ press releases and phone calls regarding the demonstrations were presented as evidence of HDK membership. The prosecutor’s office demanded 5 to 10 years of imprisonment under Article 314/2 of the Turkish Penal Code and an increased sentence under the Anti-Terror Law.
