Journalist Ayşenur Arslan acquitted

Journalist Ayşenur Arslan was acquitted in the lawsuit filed against her due to ‘making propaganda for a terrorist organization’. Arslan, who was on trial for comments she made on Halk TV in the aftermath of the October 1, 2023 terrorist bombing at the Atatürk Boulevard entrance of the Turkish National Police Headquarters in Ankara, was found not guilty by the court today against a request for a prison sentence ranging from one to seven and a half years.

Arslan’s lawyer Uğur Poyraz emphasized his client’s career as a journalist and said the allegations were unfortunate. Although the prosecutor in his final opinion considered Arslan’s statements as ‘statements calling for violence’, the court rejected this view and ruled for acquittal.

In his defense, Arslan stated that his remarks were taken out of context and that he had commented within the boundaries of journalism and added: “As a final word, I say justice, not acquittal.”
