Press organizations in front of the Ministry of Justice: Journalists are not criminals

Press professional organizations gathered in front of the Ministry of Justice on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day and emphasized that “Journalism is not a crime and journalists should stop being portrayed as potential criminals.”

DFG, MKG, DİSK Basın-İş, ÇGD, Haber-Sen and Journalists’ Association gathered in front of the Ministry of Justice in Ankara. Journalists unfurled a banner reading “Journalism is not a crime” and carried photographs of Cihan Bilgin and Nazım Daştan, who were killed in northern and eastern Syria, and of journalists in prison.

Speaking on behalf of DİSK Basın-İş, İzel Sezer said that Turkey’s fall to 159th place in the RSF Press Freedom Index was not a coincidence and added: “Censorship, economic pressures, self-censorship, precariousness and low wages have become commonplace.” He emphasized that detentions, arrests and house arrests are an attack on the people’s right to information.

Speaking on behalf of DFG, journalist Selman Güzelyüz said, “Free press workers are arrested, detained, threatened or killed because they refuse to accept this game.” DEM Party Amed MP Ceylan Akça said, “I greet all free press workers in the person of Nazım, Cihan and Hero with respect.”
