Human Rights Watch (HRW) indicated that Turkey is violating the right to election by dismissing and arresting elected mayors with trustee operations against municipalities. The statement pointed out that trustees have been assigned to 32 municipalities of the People’s Democratic Party (HDP) since the local elections on March 31 and there are currently 23 arrested mayors, expressing that “local elections were thus cancelled in effect.” HRW Europe and Middle East Director Hugh Williamson further stated, “Removing, detaining and putting on trial local Kurdish politicians as armed militants with no compelling evidence of criminal activity seems to be the Turkish government’s preferred way to wipe out political opposition.” Please click here for the full statement.
