Police intervene against miners marching from Soma to Ankara

Mine workers in the Soma district of Manisa, who said their wages and labor receivables had been paid in installments for nearly a year, began a march to Ankara to obtain their rights. After a press statement organized under the leadership of the Ege Region Branch of the Mine Workers’ Union of Türkiye, the miners set out on foot and first visited the Mining Martyrs’ Cemetery to commemorate colleagues who had died. Police blocked workers who wanted to march to Ankara and intervened against the march. The miners said they were exposed to pepper spray along the route and criticized the intervention. Despite the obstruction, the workers continued marching and stopped for a break at a facility at the 17th kilometer. The miners also said they had difficulty finding buses to reach Ankara. They alleged that bus companies would not provide vehicles and that, when vehicles were available, they were asked to direct the buses to the Kırkağaç Çamı area instead of Ankara. The workers continued their struggle to collect their wages and other receivables.
