Art teacher F.Ç., who worked in the Edremit district of Balıkesir, was arrested on charges of “degrading the symbols of state sovereignty” and “violating the Law on Crimes Committed Against Atatürk” over an Instagram post. Officers from the Edremit Police Department Security Bureau examined a public post from an account using the name “BARYEK” during a virtual patrol of social media. Police assessed the post as insulting the Turkish flag and Atatürk and reported it to prosecutors. The investigation determined that the account belonged to 48-year-old art teacher F.Ç., who worked at 75th Year Secondary School. Police searched the teacher’s home and seized a mobile phone and laptop computer. F.Ç. was detained and, after police and prosecutor procedures, was referred to court, arrested and sent to prison.
