The Adana Regional Court of Justice upheld prison sentences totaling 42 years for 11 people who called for participation in the 10 October Peace Rally scheduled to be held in Ankara in 2015. On 6 October 2015, the Labor and Democracy Platform attempted to hold a press statement and march in Adana’s İnönü Park to call for participation in the rally. Police blocked the action and intervened against participants. Eleven people who took part were prosecuted on charges of “violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations” and “resisting a public official.” The local court convicted them. After an 11-year judicial process, the Adana Regional Court of Justice rejected the appeal and found the sentences lawful. Lawyer Tugay Bek argued that the decision violated the right to peaceful assembly and demonstration guaranteed under Article 34 of the Constitution. Bek criticized prison sentences totaling 42 years for people who had called for peace and said the courts had ignored the case law of the Constitutional Court and the European Court of Human Rights.
