The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an ex officio investigation into lawyer and academic Osman Korkut Kanadoğlu over a speech he gave at the Istanbul Bar Association’s 128th Ordinary General Assembly held at the Haliç Congress Center on 24-25 October. Kanadoğlu, the Lawyers’ Rights Group candidate for Istanbul Bar Association president who received 2,543 votes in the election, criticized judges who failed to comply with Constitutional Court rulings and issued arbitrary detention decisions. Saying that they monitored and reported judicial decisions they considered unlawful, Kanadoğlu argued that judicial officials responsible for such decisions could not escape accountability. After his speech was targeted by pro-government media outlets, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office announced that it had launched an investigation based on the content and context of his remarks.
