Security guards and police intervened against executives of Eğitim Sen Branch No. 4 who visited Sait Güzelcan Secondary School in İzmir’s Bornova district as part of union activities. Eğitim Sen said the visit, which took place with the knowledge of the school administration, was obstructed and union executives were threatened. Police detained the union executives and the school’s deputy principal who supported them. The union executives were released after being fined, while the deputy principal was referred to the prosecutor’s office. Eğitim Sen said the intervention violated constitutionally protected rights to organize and conduct union activities. Citing Article 118 of the Turkish Penal Code, which criminalizes obstruction of union rights, the union announced that it would file criminal complaints against the security guards, police officers and those responsible for the intervention.
