Bolu 3rd High Criminal Court sentenced suspended Mayor Tanju Özcan, former Deputy Mayor Süleyman Can and former BolSev executive Ali Sarıyıldız to seven years, three months and 15 days in prison each for “extortion by coercion in a successive manner” in the extortion investigation into Bolu Municipality. The court ordered the continued detention of all three defendants and imposed a four-year political ban on Özcan and Can. Özcan and Sarıyıldız also received separate prison and judicial fines for each victim on aggravated fraud charges. The court suspended Özcan’s prison sentences on those charges and deferred the announcement of the verdicts against Sarıyıldız. It acquitted the two defendants of bribery and violating Law No. 5072. Among the other defendants, Hakan Yılmaz was sentenced to five years and 10 months for extortion, Naim Ayhan to five years, two months and 15 days for bribery, and Mustafa Altındal to two years and 11 months for influence peddling. The court ordered Altındal’s release and acquitted 11 defendants of all charges.
