The first hearing of the trial of journalist Rahime Karvar on charges of “illegal organization membership” resulted in her release. Many press and rights organizations attended the hearing held at Istanbul 24th High Criminal Court. In her defense, Karvar stated that journalism is not a crime and that she does not accept the criminalization of women’s self-defense, and said, “My limits are determined by the public interest.” Despite the prosecution’s request for detention, the court released Karvar with a ban on leaving the country. Hearing adjourned until July 17th.
