Suspended Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu was sentenced to 2 years and 1 month in prison in a case in which he was tried on charges of insulting former Tuzla Mayor Şadi Yazıcı. At a hearing held in Silivri on 11 September, the court ruled that the offense had been established. The case was filed after Yazıcı complained following an argument between İmamoğlu and Yazıcı at the opening of the Tuzla Advanced Biological Treatment Facilities on 25 October 2022. İmamoğlu’s lawyers sought an acquittal, arguing that the remarks were not directed at Yazıcı. The ruling remained open to appeal and further review. It was stated that İmamoğlu could face a political ban if the sentence became final.
