Human Rights Watch (HRW) indicated that the ban issued by Ankara Governorate against LGBTI events is discrimination as well as a violation of basic rights, demanding an immediate revocation.
The ban was initially issued indefinitely in November 2017 under the conditions of State of Emergency. The State of Emergency has ended in July 2018 and the ban is ongoing. HRW indicated that the Governorate is claiming so-called reasons for the ban such as “social sensitivities,” “prevention of crimes” and those that are allegedly make the ban compulsory such as “being an open and close danger in terms of public safety” and “the protection of general health, morality and the rights and freedoms of others.” The organization stated that such claims are baseless, that they involve a prejudice that is hostile against LGBTIs and that the ban is against the international law.
